I am replying to my own post to make some corrections on my original
description and diagnosis of a problem that occurred on our new Performa
6300. I orginally observed that when Appletalk was turned on, Zterm 1.01
would lock up when the program was started. This in turn caused a serial
port lockup that would not go away after restart. The serial port lockup was
accompanied by an inability to restart or shutdown the computer from the
Special pulldown menu and Teleport control panel could not tell what kind
of modem was connected.

I have since observed that this apparent incompatability between Appletalk
and Zterm happens only when Apple Remote Access is set to receive a call.
Furthermore, this only occurs when Serial DMA is installed on the system.
Ultimately, the cure has been to remove the Serial DMA extension and use
the Serial Port Arbitrator that comes with ARA instead -- a simple and
obvious solution with the benefit of hindsight. It was unclear at the time
that I installed Serial DMA whether or not it was compatible with (or even
intended for use in) the Performa 6300. It is clear now that at least for
this purpose it is not.
