Help needed for upgrading LC III

I have a mac LC III computer that I want to upgrade. I wish to put in
some more MHz but I'm not really sure where to start. I am in the process
of buying 16 MB of RAM, but any way at all that you can think of to make
this old hummer go faster, I would really appreciate your input. Thanks in
advance.

There really isn't a way to "put in more MHz," as you put it- upgrading
the RAM will not improve the speed of the processor. RAM upgrades
usually do result in some overall computational improvements, however,
since applications have more room to work. At the very least, more RAM
will provide you with the ability to have more programs open
simultaneously.

There are a number of third-party accelerators for your LC III, most of
which make use of the LC-compatible PDS expansion socket on the
motherboard. They will provide a moderate benefit for a couple of
hundred dollars.

Frankly, your best solution at this point is to get by for as long as
you can with what you have, and replace the system with a low-end Power
Mac- perhaps a 7200. Use of non PowerPC-based Macs like yours is a
dead-end, in fairly short order. More and more utility and application
developers for the Mac are producing PowerPC-only versions of their
products as the bulk of current Mac users migrate to PowerPC.

The only upgrade I have seen for the LCIII, is to swap motherboards for a
Quadra 605. If you can afford it, max the RAM out. It makes a big
difference in speed.

Try MicroMac Technology at http://micromac.com

I haven't used them but they have a selection of accelerators at
reasonable prices.

Sonnett is supposed to have a 33mhz 040 accelerator for the LCIII in March.

You may want to look into the Performa 6400/180. The computer alone sells
for $1395 in our local Apple shop (MicroComputer Center). It would seem
that this would be cheaper in the long run.
