Help please...

My 6100 has suddenly stopped doing ANYTHING.

A week or so ago I noticed the clock had reset to 1956...

Now when I power on I not the normal Ding!!!

Then NOTHING..

No disk activity (hard or floppy) and no screen.

Could this be a dead battery or is it something a bit more MAJOR????

Any help would be appreciated.

Luckily for you, it looks like the clock resetting is the clue. This means
that your battery was rather dead. Now it's probably *so* dead that it
can't start the machine when you press the key. That's the drawback of not
having a physical Big Red Switch.

Changing the battery should fix it.

You will find more info about how to change your logic
board battery at: http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh.
The batteries cost about $10-15 in the US.

Absolutely the battery. Your symptoms are normal for the 6100. Battery is
$9.95 at Radio Shack and very easy to change.

Unfortunately, the 6100 does have a physical 'Big Red Switch' :-), so a
dead battery shouldn't stop it starting (at least it should display
_something_ on the monitor).

Best take your Mac to a service centre.

This is wrong; on a 6100, as I said, a totally dead battery will prevent it
from starting up at all and the monitor too will remain dead (it needs
output from the computer to switch on).

So changing the battery should do it.

No, DON'T take it to a service center..... just change the battery. The
"1956" syndrome is a dead-ringer for a dead battery. These batteries
last only about 2 years +/-, so it should be about "due"

Go to any Radio Shack and buy part number 23-026, price $10. Pull the
plastic cover off the battery (don't worry if it breaks, it's just "for
show"), pull out the old battery, and put the new one in. Then reboot.

I'll bet you're pleasantly surprised!

This parallels my experience. A dying PRAM batter caused quirky
start-ups on my 6100. When it died, so did the 6100: No startup chime,
no starting from any attached drive (internal, external, CD, MO, or
floppy), nada. Replacing that puppy will save you a lot of $ at the
repair shop.

Interesting suggestion given that the questioner was posting from a .uk
address. I think his nearest Radio Shack is 5000 miles away...

My Performa 475 has a physical Big Red Switch too, and a dead battery
can prevent it from starting up. Why not a 6100?

Given that the original questioner noted that he'd seen the famous 1956
date reset, this does suggest that a dead battery is the problem.

It's almost certainly the battery, and RS components sell them
for about 5 pounds. RS have trade counters in some towns so start
looking in the yellow pages

Actually there are 516 such outlets in the UK, called "Tandy;" Tandy spun
off its UK/Canadian/Australian Radio Shack type operations into InterTAN,
Inc. a while back.

Until you do, try this trick: Leave it on for a minute, then press the

My thanks to everyone who replied and emailed me.

I managed to locate a battery and once again my 6100 is working again....

Regarding Radio Shack, here in the UK it s called Tandy BUT they don't
stock the battery.

Once again many thanks.

Actually, I live in the UK, and my nearest Radio Shack is within walking
distance. (OK, so it's called Tandy over here - same company.) Then again,
they probably don't stock that part, and it'll cost 10 if they do. But
I've got an early 6100, so I suppose I'll have to find out for myself
shortly.

I live in the UK, and I know about the firm that runs Radio Shack shops
in the USA running shops called Tandy here. I also know they don't
stock anything useful like lithium batteries for Macs - I've looked.
Maplin is a better bet, but there's fewer Maplin shops around.

The PRAM battery inside is dead. Replacing it is fairly easy, and you
can probably get one for about $7.

Is it my imagination, or are there a *lot* of 6100 PRAM batterys dying
this week? I had to replace mine a couple of days ago...

well, they are about the same age! At my school, I have been slowly
having to replace the LCIII batteries, as well as the ones in some

Might it be the time running out on a whole lot of them bought around the
same time? After all, the 6100 was a lively seller early on.

Tandy and Radio Shack are very different types of shop - you can't buy
batteries for Macs in Tandy shops in the UK. Maplin's a better bet.

I sold my 6100/60 to a friend of mine about a year ago, and he realized

Mine just started doing something funny: The hard drive thinks it has
about 30Mg more on it than it really does. Could this be related?
It started after I upped to 7.6 from 7.5.3.

My 840's battery died this week too, and it cost 10 ukp from the local
AppleCentre (I fitted it myself) - daylight robbery!

You may not have been seeing the various posts but it seems that alot of
6100's have been dying lately due to the battery.

So I would recommend that you replace the battery before taking it to
the shop. This will probably fix the problem and save you the service
fee that any shop would charge just to change a battery.

Good luck,
