Formatting 3rd party drives with HD SC Setup?

Well, I know about the patch to Apple's HD SC Setup which allows it to see
non-Apple drives, and have established that this part of the procedure
works.

Is there any way of telling beforehand whether the formatting process will
succeed on any individual drive? I've tried twice in the last 3 years or
so, and the formatting has proceeded apparently OK until the tool tries to
mount the disk, which has always failed for me. HD SC Setup then cannot
modify the drive partitions either, unless a 'repair' is attempted with
Norton (but subsequent modifications inside HD SC Setup still do not
mount). The infuriating thing is not that I've taken a risk, but that the
process is _so_ nearly complete.

Any clues anyone? Hacks to boot blocks?

While I'm here: I fell back to using a 1992 vintage formatter, which I
doubt is SCSI Manager 4.2 compliant. What will the symptoms of this be
running under Sys 7.5.5?

Cheers,
Francis

The machine will randomly hang, and basically be bugger all use to anyone.

Been there some time ago. Upgraded a Q650 to a PM7100 and moved the (third
party) drive across. Had nothing but problems until I twigged and upgraded
the driver on the disk.
