Mac LC

Hi,

I don't know if I'm in the right place but perhaps someone could help
me or direct me to soemone who can. I have been offered an Apple LC
4/40 and a b&w HP Deskwriter for 50 pounds sterling. I know it works
because I've tried it out and it seems fine. However, coming from an
IBM PC background I know very little about Apple Macs and want to know
if it is worth buying. I'm trying to set my parents up with a basic
computer system that they can use to write letter and keep track of
their small business incomings and outgoings and I though this might
be ideal. What I'm coming around to asking is, am I likely to be able
to be able to get software off the 'Net that will run on this machine?
Also, will I be able to download it onto my PC and then transfer it
over?... I know I can format disks on the Apple that can be read on
PC.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Paul Burton

The 40MB HD will be the killer; 40MB is probably used up? How much room do
you have left on it? By the time you load on Internet software,
decompressors, unzippers, etc. you may no longer have room to download
files. You'll have to consider buying a new HD to replace internal HD or
get a SCSI HD.

Depends on the software you need: size if file, processing speed. I have
an LC II 4/40; it's so full I can only browse or read newsgroups.

Maybe, sometimes the binary files get converted to text/ascii; so you'll
need to install more software to ensure integrity. But then you'll need
more room on HD.

I used an LC for about a year. The saving grace was buying a zip drive.
I basically stored only my system folder (with 7.5), font's and internet
programs on the hardrive, everything else I ran off the zip drive.
Ok..it wasn't the fastest machine but it help me do enough freelance
work designeing childrens books with illustrator, quark and photoshop to
buy my new mac...(well it's not new anymore)...a 7500/100, 28.8 modem,
and 17" monitor.
I don't know the equivalent (sp?) of 50 pounds sterling to US dollars
but it is a servicable machine.

My LC has served me faithfully for 6 years. I've seen the new PowerMacs
and I think they suck. They come with about 25 or so extensions
pre-loaded, the things are abominably slow even with basic tasks. They
crash all the time, and the system software takes up almost 4MB of the
RAM. That's totally rediculous. Apple has once again shown me that what it
promises in a new product is often nothing like what one gets.

My LC is 4/40, no upgrades. I have a 14.4 modem with it, and all I do is
internet. It has MS Word 5 on it, although I rarely use it (I prefer
TeachText). I also have other assorted utilities of use to me. So
altogether, I have PPP Internet Software, NewsWatcher, Macweb, Fetch, NCSA
Telnet, MSW 5, AND the system software (7.1.1), and I still have 14MB of
free space. I do right well for myself :)

Slow?! I have an LC and a PowerMac and use a Pentium. My PPC is MUCH
faster than the Pentium, and about 10 times faster than the LC. If you
use plainold 68k code wiht a PowerMac, you still get '040 speeds - and the
PPC code is between 6-14 times fater than the fastest Quadra!

My LC crashed about 3 times a week (I am a power-user and I fiddle a lot)
and my PPC crashes less! With the low prices of RAM, that little 4MB is
nothing.

Well, I suppose if all you are doing is elemantary processing, than the LC
should do just fine.
