Hi,

I don't know if I'm in the right place but perhaps someone could help
me or direct me to soemone who can. I have been offered an Apple LC
4/40 and a b&w HP Deskwriter for 50 pounds sterling. I know it works
because I've tried it out and it seems fine. However, coming from an
IBM PC background I know very little about Apple Macs and want to know
if it is worth buying. I'm trying to set my parents up with a basic
computer system that they can use to write letter and keep track of
their small business incomings and outgoings and I though this might
be ideal. What I'm coming around to asking is, am I likely to be able
to be able to get software off the 'Net that will run on this machine?
Also, will I be able to download it onto my PC and then transfer it
over?... I know I can format disks on the Apple that can be read on
PC.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Paul Burton

For 50 quid, it's a bargain. It's not the most powerful machine in the
world (you've just got a 16 MHz 020 in there) and the memory is going to
be a little tight, but it's fine for word processing and small business
accounts. You shouldn't have too many problems running net s/w. Macs
can deal with PC formatted disks without any trouble - pick up a copy
of "PC Exchange" for about 20 quid, or install system 7.5 (it's bundled
with this). In any case, your LC should already have "Apple File Exchange"
on the HD..this is perfectly adequate for reading PC formatted disks.

As a rough comparison, the LC is about as fast as a 25 MHz 386sx PC.

I have the same setup - Mac LC and HP DeskWriter. Great combo - but I
daisy-chained another 40 meg hard-drive to it. Turn on sequence is now
a little more important - added-on hard drive first - but that is
probably a function of where the system folder is located, what is set
for start-up items, etc, some personal prefs, and some things that I
just never got around to setting up right.
I wouldn't sell mine for 50 pounds, I think that is only about $75!
Fantastic deal for a great computer/printer. WOW!

I also have an LC 4/40 but with a stylewriter.

I have doubled the hard dis capacity with a program called Stacker, which
basically does a transparent whole disk compression on it, by replacing
the hard disk driver.

I wonder though about someone else's advice to upgrade to system 7.5. Can
anyone answer whether on these older Macs that wouldnt be dreadfully slow?
(Also for me, foes it re-write the disk driver?)

Hi,

Just a note of thanks to everyone who offered advice on the Mac LC
that I've been offered for 50 pounds (sterling). I've successfully
downloaded some software onto the machine from the Net and it works
fine. I'm going to go ahead and but the machine.

Thanks again

Paul.
