I have 2 zips, one external hooked to my 7600, another internal came with my G3/266. I first thought they are fast, coz I was comparing to the floopy drive. But they are definitely not fast enough to run programs. well, I am sure you can run some older program, such as claris works 1, or simple text. but if u want to run photoshop, pagemaker, word, excel or any new game, then forget it! The fastest removable disk drive is the iomega jaz. a new 2GB version are coming out soon. I had a Iomega 1GB jaz, which died after 7 month of use and 4GB of data were lost. I didn't like it when i first bought it. It's noisy, and the disks got so hot after use you can't handle comfortably it with your hands. The most reliable removable disk drive out there are MOs, but they are also the slowest. There really is no single drive that can meet all the demands, at least not yet. If you want to transfer files, buy a zip, they are the most popular drives out there. If you want to run program off it reliably, get a HD... they are the cheapest, fastest and reasonably reliable. If you simply want to do back up, get a CD-R/W or MO. MO are still expensive, a 640MB MO can set u as high as $900 . On the other hand, CDs are also extremely reliable, and a blank CD cost as little as $2, and if u have a 24 x CD-rom, they can be faster your HD.
