This is just my opinion. I'm a Mac user, and I've been frustrated by
the lack of cheap removable storage solutions to back up my hard drive and
archive my applications. I couldn't afford the other types of media
(SyQuest drives, Iomega Bernoulli technology, MO) and buying an external
hard disk was a limited solution since I used it primarily to back up my
primary one. I also didn't like the limitations of a tape backup system.
Second, I've accumulated a large number of floppy disks which became
unmanageable ( and the short life of floppy disks resulted in me losing
data over the years). I'm also involved with WWW page creation, and the
Zip cartridges allow me to use scratch disks which don't clutter my
primary hard drive. The Zip Drive filled a void that many low to middle
end Macintosh users have yelled about - removable storage at a low
price.

My one guess why the PC parallel port version of the Zip drive hasn't
caught on is because (anecdotes I've heard) is that it is slow compared to
the SCSI version.

   Hope this helps.

BTW, is there any documented evidence for the unreliability of the
Zip. I haven't had any problems with mine, and although some folks have,
the many happy Zip users are probably keeping quiet because they don't
have any complaints.
