Even with Windows 3.11 etc. Backing up to removable storage meant using Norton Backup or something. On a Mac, file manipulation is so much easier -- just move icons around. Truly graphical. Removable storage makes more sense if you can actually use the files that are stored there (on the Zip disk etc). Then, there's the question of configs etc -- having to make the stuff work with Windows/DOS. If either Windows/Norton Backup/Zip disk had problems with the configurations, then it was possible I couldn't access the files. Not so on the mac. Then, it was concievable that most PC users wouldn't bother with such devices, and why would I need the portability. Using the Zip drive on a friends computer would mean creating havoc with it's config/autoexec, and most of my friends hate that. Some of them don't even use the c:\windows or c:\dos directory as the default windows/dos dirs. How to use my ready made batch files then? And my Zip drive would have a different name (e:? f:?) on each computer. On a Mac, such directory names fuss are usually not important. I could run MS Word 5.1 off a floppy/Zip disk if I wanted. Try that on a PC. Then, PC drives are pretty cheap and relatively easier to install -- just change the CMOS settings, and format it! Why bother with removables. Those are my just my reasons for the Zip drive to be more popular on Macs. I'd use the Zip drive to store all my Sys 7.5 & update 1.0 image files, my Quicktime movies, JPEGS... stuff that are mostly permanent storage. Cheers. -- Chik cc_foo@postoffice.sandybay.utas.edu.au
