No idea about the LC-II, but the answer should be a definite yes.

>They seem to be a fair bit cheaper - why? SCSI is SCSI isn't it?

Yes, SCSI is SCSI, generally. You won't get the best performance from the
newer SCSI drives, using the later standards with an older controller, but
if the SCSI standard has been adhered to by the manufacturers, it should
be backward compatible, and all SCSI devices should work with all
controllers. This is in a perfect world of course... but there is a very
good chance that you won't have any trouble.

I guess the answer about the Mac dealers' prices is that they can
generally get away with it because a lot of Mac owners think they are
sufficiently different that they need special "Macintosh hard-drives".
The number of Mac owners who try to sell their old drives as "Mac
hard-drive" is crazy, they're limiting their market severely. Anyway, I
guess my advice here is by all means, look to other sources for your SCSI
devices, 99.9% of the time they'll adhere to the SCSI standards closely
enough to work fine. Having said that, I just bought myself a new 730Mb
Quantum Lightning SCSI-2 drive, not for a Mac, but I did look at a few Mac
dealers' prices... most were exhorbitant in comparison, but there was one
I saw in Mac User magazine which was reasonable. This particular drive is
going for a very good price lately, and I get 3.5Mb/sec from mine, so I
can certainly recommend it. I have heard of a few people who bought 4 of
these drives rather than one large drive simply because of the low price,
and also because breaking your storage across two devices is generally safer.

Hope this helps... keep looking around...
