no problems with the modems and also PC Card modems, in my experience.
Just make sure you get a Mac cable for the external jobbies, and then
hunt around for a decent INIT string that works (you'll typically have
to add a '&D0' command to the default string, and you might have to
change a DIP switch setting on some brands, e.g. some models of the
USRobotics required this).
If you use OT/PPP as your transport protocol, download Apple's
ModemScriptGenerator from the Unsupported directory of their ftp site,
and create your own modem script...)
For faxing, try Apple's own software (look on the OS 8/8.1 CD). Works
for a wide range of modems. There used to be some voice stuff (answering
machine) too, but I haven't tracked that down yet

No problem, but *do* try before you buy. There are a lot of extremely
poor monitors out there.....

Ethernet, no problem (use a crossover cable or a hub). Other: try
PowerPrint (commercial cable and software solution), although this is
one area where the price differential is not as great, if we're talking
about quality matching, too.

Other gear, RAM, PCI cards etc is also possible, but you'll have to
research the specifications, availability of drivers (if necessary)
etc....

Good luck!
