I'm very much afraid that it's a failure in the connector to your screen; I
had exactly the same (half way across the screen from the bottom etc) on an
IBM laptop a few years ago. With luck it may be fixable by a good hardware
man. On my IBM it was under guarantee and they changed the screen but you
don't want to try this with your own money.
