During the course of normal operations this morning a mysterious line
of darkened pixels appeared on the screen of my PowerBook 520c. It started
at the bottom of the screen, about 6/10ths of the way over from the right
hand side and ran up to about the middle of the screen. It appeared
generally as a line of darkened pixels, but would sometimes switch to oddly
coloured pixels--the pixels were never actually non-functional, since they
still could show correct colours and shapes depending on what the
background or window in their region happened to be.
I immediately panicked, of course, and ran every kind of test and
maintenance utility that I had. I didn't expect this to do much, and I
don't think it did, but after 30 minutes or so this line "dimmed" to appear
as a line of pixels slightly greyer than they should be. The line is still
pretty much detactable as I type now, though not nearly as gruesomely
distracting as it was.
This leaves me with the nagging worry that the problem will
re-intensify, probably worse than before, without warning.
Anyone familiar with this or similar problems? I can't quite figure
out what's going on, but this is the only passive matrix colour screen I've
worked with. It _was_ built in 1991, so it _is_ getting on a bit, but it's
still worrying.
BTW, does anyone know a good Cambridge-area (UK) Apple service place
*besides* the Apple Cambridge BusinessCentre? Last time I dealt with them
it was a nightmare of the first order ...
Cheers,
Carl
Reading the post sounds like a cable lose?? which is possible since the
cable wraps around a few hinges.
If you wanna try .. release the plastic cover on the bottom of the screen
(under the rainbow apple). . . Tilt the screen back til you see the seam
and slip a small thin screwdriver like from an electronics kit to gently
ppry it off. . it comes ez but you might break a few plastic latches
which are very fragile. . .so be CAREFUL!!
the video cable is the 1 x 2 cm brown chip with a ribbion cable on
theright side .. it can be ez pried off gently with a pair of thin
pliers. . grip the sides .. or pushed in. . .
if you want to check for other loose connections. . there are two silver
torx8 screws there .. and two more under the rubber stoppers next to the
520c at the top of the screen (remove them with your fingernails).
after that its ez to see the other screws and remove them .. careful to
keep the cables intact. . they can be removed ez from the circuit board.
.. to remove the screen .. . gently pry off the cone shaped hinge covers
and you see another set of screws. . make sure all cables are
disconnected.
thanks
