Does anyone know where I can get the NOMAD II at the cheapest rate?

I know I should be downloading one of those hefty programs that does that
sort of comparison... but I couldn't be bothered..

i got the nomad II from the soundblaster store with no memory card
(Nomad II 0MB) for $110 including shipping. mobshop has the memory
cards in 32MB for about $80, 64MB for about $125. that can get you a
nomad II with 64mb for about $230-$250 instead of $299.
mobshop also has promotion codes that can get 20% off the memory card if
you're willing to look for 'em.

Mobshop is probably a good deal for the cards, but the emusic.com deal
(buy $50 worth of MP3s and get a free Nomad II) is an even better one.
You can read about this deal at slickdeals.net or at emusic.com. The
MP3 selection at emusic.com is so-so at best, but you probably can't
beat this deal right now. It will undoubtedly take several weeks to
get the player, but I for one can wait at this price . . .

I don't know. Counting $50 for the player and maybe another $75 for
another 32MB card... $125 is _still_ an awful lot to pay for a device
that can only hold about an hour of music.

Prices on memory have got to come way, way down (to, say, $20 for 32MB)
before this will be a remotely useful technology.

True, MP3 players as a rule are definitely overpriced--but they remain
useful where shock resistance is paramount (running, some forms of
travel, etc.). Otherwise, CD-R/RW is the value leader (also blows away
those stupid Zip/LS-120 disks), and I use CD-R/RW everywhere else.
Once portable CD-R/RW players which decode MP3s become widely available
(from major manufacturers, not the few "bit players" carrying them
now), they should drive the price of existing MP3 players through the
floor.

True, CD-R/RW is a much better value overall, but MP3 players offer the
ultimate in shock resistance (new portable CD players from Philips,
Sony, and Aiwa notwithstanding). When shock-resistant CD-R/RW players
which also decode MP3s become widely available from major
manufacturers, prices of existing MP3 players should plummet.
