I have a PBook G3 Pismo (Firewire) with the latest Firmware installed. I
also have an external Firewire device (with Oxford 911 chip set) with an
Apple 2.5' 5 gb HD (with Mac OS 9.1 installed on the external 2.5). When I
plug in the ext Firewire drive all is normal in every way (copying/deleting
files etc). I can select the FWire drive in the startup control panel....but
it never starts up from this drive. The PBook tries to start up from the
Oxford 911 (Clearlight box) but always goes back to the internal drive.
HELP...any suggestions?

I can't tell you why this isn't working, but I can give you a datapoint:

I can boot my iBook SE (firewire built-in) off a 2.5" 20GB external
firewire drive (Oxford 911 chipset, clearcase). The external drive has
OS 9.1 on it.

Sometimes even knowing something can be done (or not) is a help.

Obviously the firewire device needs a blessed System Folder on it. I'd
try dragging a new System Folder over (ensuring it has firewire
drivers, etc and maybe no non-Apple extensions initially), and of course
blessing it.

As far as selecting the startup drive, there's the "Startup Disk"
control panel of course, but my iBook SE also has an version of Open
Firmware that lets me just hold down Option at boot and select from any
attached drives.
