We have just added some of our Macs to our campus network (Ethernet). The day we did, one of the Mac users called and said someone was printing images on his printer from somewhere on the network. We support mainly IBM PC's and admit we know very little about the Macs. How can we limit who can print to a printer connected to a Mac on the network. The person that complained has a laser printer connected by a thinnet segment to his Mac and that segment is connected to our ethernet backbone. Thanks for any help and assistance. Mike, As you haven't supplied what NOS (Network Operating System) software you're using, this reply is going to assume you're using Novell NetWare 3.1x If that is the case, does the Mac printer have a print queue set up for it on the Novell system (ie, use PCONSOLE to monitor it's print queue)? Ok, now assuming all this is true, you can limit who is able to submit print jobs to the queue, either by group or user. By default Novell allocates the group EVERYONE to every print queue, but you can remove that and create a group called, say MAC_PRINTER and only users who are a member of this group would be able to see the print queue and thus submit print jobs to it. Then all you would need do is add the appropriate users to the group (ie, the ones you want to ALLOW to use the printer. Does this help you? - Alex (Replies to: alexb@firststate.com.au)
