We spool all our lpr jobs to an NT box running lpd. All works under OS9. The NT box receives the print request and checks if it is a registered user (owner of the machine) checks the print quota etc and then prints. Under lpr on OSX in the terminal app all is fine. When user "harry" issues an lpr job, then it is user harry whose job is spooled, authenticated and printed. When you use a MacOS X application however all your print jobs are sent as user "root" and if root can't print, or doesn't have a quota, the print job will simply die a quiet death registering some information in the bowels of the NT box's logs. (users only get access via DHCP and hardware ethernet address so that's how we authenticate initially) I should add it makes no difference whether you are an OSX admin user or not. -- Associate Professor I.
