Metrowerks Releases Industry's Most Comprehensive Toolset for Mac(r) OS
New Version Adds Support for Cocoa(tm) Technology and Interface Builder,
Plus Code Completion Feature for Faster, More Efficient Development
WWDC 2002, SAN JOSE, Calif. - May 6, 2002 - Metrowerks, the industry's
leading provider of development tools for Mac(r) OS, is releasing this
month the newest version of its CodeWarrior(tm) Development Tools for Mac
OS. Version 8 is Metrowerks' most comprehensive toolset for Mac OS to
date. The product supports four languages (C, C++, Objective C, and
Java(tm)) and provides Mac developers the ability to build both Mac OS X
and Classic Mac OS applications utilizing Carbon(tm), Cocoa(tm), Java(tm),
and Classic Mac OS technologies. The tools are being demonstrated this
week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, Calif.
CodeWarrior Development Tools for Mac OS now includes two frameworks
developers can use to quickly design and build user interfaces:
PowerPlant(tm) and Cocoa. Developers can use the industry's most popular
C++ class library, Metrowerks' PowerPlant, to create both Mac OS X and
Classic Mac OS applications. And, with Version 8, developers can build
native Mac OS X applications using Apple's Objective C class library,
Cocoa. In addition, Version 8 includes Apple's Interface Builder, which
enables developers to quickly design and build user interfaces for their
Cocoa and/or Carbon applications.
"Adobe uses CodeWarrior tools for all our Macintosh product development,
including Adobe Photoshop, because it is the best solution for our
development needs," said Chris Cox, senior computer scientist for
Photoshop at Adobe Systems Inc. "We're looking forward to taking
advantage of the new functionality in Version 8, particularly workspaces,
code completion, and event points in the debugger."
Also new in Version 8 is the Code Completion feature for C, C++, and Java
languages, which provides fast access to the prototypes and parameters of
any function in a project. This is designed to enable developers to write
code more quickly, without stopping to look up hard-to-remember functions
and symbols.
"Alias|Wavefront used the previous version CodeWarrior for Mac OS to
develop our Maya software because of its excellent reliability and
performance," said Andrew Pearce, director, Maya Technologies. "We're
excited about the release of Version 8, which appears to be an even more
feature-rich, high performance toolset. CodeWarrior's speed and stability
on a code base as large as Maya was key to our success in launching the
product."
Cross-Platform Development
CodeWarrior Development Tools for Mac OS provides the ability to develop
on multiple hosts and for multiple targets, meaning developers can build
software for both the Mac OS and Windows(r) operating systems, using the
same development environment. Using CodeWarrior tools for cross-platform
projects minimizes code changes between platforms and eliminates the need
to support different development environments on different platforms.
Java RAD Tools
Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools for Java technology allow
developers to graphically design their software in an interactive
environment. Using Metrowerks' Java RAD tools, developers can write less
code, build easier-to-use software, and complete their projects faster.
Developers can use Metrowerks' Java RAD tools to graphically create user
interfaces by dragging and dropping components into a palette. At the
same time, the CodeWarrior tools automatically generate Java code that can
be modified and enhanced, enabling developers to shorten their development
time while still being able to customize their applications and use all
the power of the Java language.
Class Browser
The CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (IDE) includes a class
browser that is designed to allow developers to navigate and conveniently
edit their code. The class browser builds a database of the symbols in
developers' code, so they can instantly look up the definition or
implementation of any symbol in their projects.
Multimedia Tutorial
Later this summer, Metrowerks will release a multimedia tutorial for the
Version 8 tools that are designed to help developers get up to speed
quickly. The tutorial will provide developers with easy-to-follow
instructions on how to use the CodeWarrior IDE.
"We're very excited about this release of our CodeWarrior tools for Mac OS
because we feel that it's our most functional and feature-rich version
yet," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks. "With
support for four languages and two frameworks - plus cross-platform
capabilities -- this release is a must-have for every Mac OS developer,
whether you're using Carbon or Cocoa, or targeting Classic Mac OS or Mac
OS X. It's truly one of a kind."
