I heard about eclipse because Erich Gamma (erich_gamma at
http://www.oti.com) is involved with it. He is one of the authors of the
book "Design Patterns". He is co-author of JUnit. He worked on
Taligent's incremental C++ development environment.

"Erich is the lead of the Eclipse Java development environment. Prior to
working on Eclipse Erich has contributed to VA/Micro Edition (part of
IBM's Java solution for embedded device programming)... Erich is leader
of the JDT subproject, and component lead for the JDT UI. Erich is a
member of the Eclipse Tools PMC."

Other than source-code control plugins, and Apple's compiler plugin, I
haven't seen ANY third-party plugins for CodeWarrior.

Where are the equivalents for CodeWarrior of the following plugins?

   http://www.instantiations.com/jfactor/

jFactor is a product family that provides powerful new code refactoring
tools to professional Java integrated development environments
[VisualAge for Java, but not CodeWarrior]. jFactor's unique set of
refactoring tools helps Java developers to safely and efficiently
restructure their code to greatly improve its quality, reliability and
maintainability.

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/JavaRefactor

The JavaRefactor plugin provides a means of automatically refactoring
compilable Java source code using a small catalog of refactoring
patterns. This currently includes class, field, method, and package
renaming and PushDown and PullUp of methods and fields in an inheritance
hierarchy. Other refactorings should be added in a future version.

   http://jrefactory.sourceforge.net/csrefactory.html

This software supports 15 refactorings. For details of what these
refactorings do and how they are implemented, please click on the links
below. The UML diagrams are reverse engineered from the .java files, so
there is no fear that they will get out of date. The class diagrams are
the main interface to the system. The user inteface for the refactory is
described here. The refactoring tool now supports the Undo operation.
The refactory tool currently supports the following IDEs:
*  Command line operation
*  Elixir IDE
*  JBuilder
* NetBeans - Extract Method Only. The UML diagrams and other
refactorings are available through the command line interface.
Visual Age and Visual Cafe are planned for the future.

(See <http://www.refactoring.com> for a more complete list of
refactorings.)

   http://jrefactory.sourceforge.net/csmetrics.html

The advantage of being able to create a parse tree for a Java source
file, is that you can count various things about the source file.
Currently the metrics are a little rough, but you can gather them from a
source tree.
The current program gathers the following metrics:
*  Number of statements
* Number of public instance methods
* Number of nonpublic instance methods
*  Number of class methods
*  Number of instance variables
*  Number of class variables
*  Number of abstract classes
*  Number of interfaces
It also outputs the metrics in a text form that allows the data

auto-expand, template-driven class generation, reflection-driven code
generation, and Elixir Inspector

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/AStylePlugin

The AStyle Beautifier Plugin formats and beautifies Java, C and C++
source code, using a platform independent version of Artistic Style
(also known as astyle), the Open Source Code Beautifier, written by Tal
Davidson (see http://astyle.sf.net).

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/CodeAid

This plugin gives Java programmers a pop-up list of possible field or
method names when "." is typed after a variable name. The name can be
selected from the list, or auto-completed with the "Tab" key. There is
also a pop-up that lists the signatures of all possible methods when "("
is typed after a method name.

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/HartMathPlugin

HartMath is a computer algebra tool. Features are: Big Number
Arithmetic; Symbolic Computations, Derivatives, Expands, Polynomials,
Vectors, Matrices; List Functions: Append, Prepend, Map, Apply, Table;
Plot Functions; Numeric Functions; Pattern Matching Rules; Pure functions

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/JBrowse

The "JBrowse" plug-in provides a highly customizable tool for navigating
through Java source code. It displays a navigation window which uses a
tree view to display the hierarchy of classes, interfaces, methods and
(optionally) attributes for the file in the current buffer. This
includes the ability to display nested classes and interfaces and their
members, implements and extends information for classes and interfaces,
and throws information for methods. A single mouse click on one of the
nodes in the tree will move to and highlight the line in the jEdit
buffer where the definition of that item begins.
Options are provided to control both what is displayed and how. These
include filtering of elements based on visibility and display using Java
source code, UML or a custom style. These options can be changed
on-the-fly using the option dialog of the plug-in. The default values
for these options may be set using the JBrowse tab of the jEdit plug-in
options dialog.

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/JIndex

The JIndex plugin enables jEdit to show the JavaDoc API html
documentation on the currently selected word, with a single key press,
in a browser of your choice. You can index the class, method and field
names of all the libraries that you frequently use, including
classes.zip, rt.jar and swingall.jar. After you have created an index,
you can execute the 'JIndex on current word' command and JIndex will
search in the index for the current word, that the cursor is on. If an
entry is found, it will display the appropiate JavaDoc URL in your
browser. If there are more than one entries on this word, you will be
presented a choose dialog.

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/JStandard

JStandard checks a buffer containing Java source code for compliance
with JavaSoft's Coding standards. Among other things JStandard checks
for:
* Naming Conventions for Classes, Interfaces, Method Names, Field
Names, Final variables, Local variables, Method parameters, Label Names
* Checks Coding Standards viz., Empty Catch Blocks, Empty Finally
Blocks, Switch Statements without default, Multiple variable
declarations per line and multiple class declarations per source file

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/SpellCheck

SpellCheck is an jEdit plugin to perform spell checking of text in a
jEdit buffer. You will need to install Aspell (http://aspell.sf.net/)
before using this plugin. Aspell is available for Windows and a variety
of UNIX platforms.
This plugin provides: an jEdit action to spell check selected text,
configurable location of the Aspell executable, spell check dialog to
allow the user to validate each suspect word (the dialog has buttons
for: Cancel, Change, Change All, Ignore, and Ignore All), it shows the
suspect word, lists suggested replacements, and has a field where the
user can type in the replacement word.

   http://plugins.jedit.org/plugins/WhiteSpace

The WhiteSpace plugin highlights normally invisible characters such as
spaces, tabs, any other whitespace, and control characters. It also
offers features to improve code readability and keep code consistently
indented.
