Metrowerks and PointBase Team to Deliver CompleteJ2ME(tm) Technology
Development Solution

End-to-End Wireless Development Kit Includes Tools, Emulator, Micro
Database Engine and a Java( Technology-Enabled Phone

AUSTIN, Texas and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -October 15, 2001- Metrowerks
and PointBase announced today the two companies have completed an
agreement that provides wireless applications developers with
comprehensive development tools. Metrowerks has created the
CodeWarrior" Wireless Development Kit, the first development kit for
wireless applications that run on the J2ME(tm) technology platform and
that allow the application to be tested in a real-world environment.

The CodeWarrior Wireless Development Kit provides a complete development
environment for creating, editing, compiling, device emulation,
debugging and testing J2ME( technology applications. The kit also
includes an iDEN i85s phone from Motorola and cables for downloading the
completed application to this sample target device. The CodeWarrior
Wireless Development Kit includes PointBase Micro, the powerful 100%
Java( technology database from PointBase.

Developers will be able to create, compile and test their applications
on a software emulator using the customizable and extensible CodeWarrior
Integrated Development Environment (IDE) from Metrowerks. Next, a
developer will download the application to the Motorola iDEN i85s phone
or to a target device of the developer's choice. The CodeWarrior
Wireless Development Kit supports wireless applications development for
any J2ME(tm) technology-enabled device, including Palm OS( handhelds
running a Java( virtual machine (JVM).

"Pointbase believes J2ME technology will become the platform-of-choice,
powering millions of mobile devices." said Bruce Scott, PointBase CEO.
"Metrowerks provides the industry-leading tools for wireless
development, so it was logical for us to team with Metrowerks to deliver
a complete solution to developers who want to develop applications
rapidly and take advantage the emerging mobile application opportunity.
PointBase and Metrowerks are leading the way for wireless developers."

To be successful, certain types of commercial wireless applications must
use the client/server model and be integrated with a local database,
rather than run on a browser-based environment that is signal dependent.
Otherwise, the user loses access to the application any time the
wireless connection is lost, such as inside a large building where the
signal may be weak or in an area with no wireless service at all. With
the client/server model using PointBase pure Java database technology as
a persistent data store, the wireless device user can continue to work
from any location.

"The occasionally connected nature of wireless devices makes thin-client
applications less than ideal. Only by using a persistent, reliable Java
technology data-store in the applications can they deliver on the full
promise of wireless and allows users to be truly productive" said David
Perkins, Metrowerks CEO. "That is why we have teamed up with PointBase,
provider of the leading 100% Java database which provides the
functionality that the growing community of wireless developers require
to create professional applications."
