Not until I filled out the survey did I find out it still requires me
to pay that S&H fee. It's not mentioned in MWRon's message nor in the
survey page. Needless to say, I did not order it.

No matter how MW's view is, I really don't think it qualifies as FREE.

I feel I was tricked into doing that survey.

Well, when I visited the site to order my *free* copy, the price was listed
as $9.95 (for shipping) plus an additional $10 for shipping. With tax that
came to $21.35. I don't mind paying for shipping, but does this mean I'll
get it twice as fast? :-)

I just filled out the survey, and ordered my copy-
And then noticed that the price ended up being 14.95 ...

CodeWarrior Specials: Early Access CD 9.95 1 9.95
Total Purchases 9.95
Shipping 5.00
Tax 0.00
Total for Metrowerks Store 14.95

I thought the 9.95 was for shipping already....?

Apparently there is a problem with the online ordering, we have noticed
that t this happens is when a customer has been ordering the cd online.
We are correcting this on the web orders to $9.95 plus a few cents for
taxes.

The problem is obvious: You're counting on Yahoo for your storefront.

Come on, guys... You're a big enough outfit you can afford to do your
own store site instead of throwing money at Yahoo for it.

A note for future reference:
The fact that Metrowerks is using a Yahoo storefront was, all by itself,
enough to put me off of actually ordering the Pro6 update I've been
considering. I want as little to do with that bunch of ad-splattering
<BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP>s as possible. I'm more than willing to do
business with Metrowerks, but when it comes to handing Yahoo so much as
a penny of my money, even indirectly... Well, let's just say I'd rather
shave my head using a rusty cheese grater, in a rubbing alcohol shower,
while chewing on tinfoil.

Do you get the idea that I disapprove of Yahoo? Good. That's the point.

would you mind to place a webcam in front of your shower when you'll
perform ? ;-)

I'm sure you'll recoup very quickly the cost for the upgrade with a slim
benefit.

Go ahead and order online. I ordered 2 days ago when the web page was
quoting the $15.50 total price, but when I got the email confirmation,
the amt charged to my credit card was actually $10.57 = $9.95 + 62 cents
in tax.

(I never knew you had to pay tax on shipping and handling, but hey, you
learn something new everyday.)

Actually, that comes about in part from companies who send you stuff for
"free + $3.95 S/H". A lot of those products really only cost about $.40
to $.50, and fulfillment was only about $.30 with postage being about
$.50 or so--leaving about $2.60 in profit for the "free" product.

(Those little battery powered "stick-on" lights you see on television
advertised as a "$60 value for 6 lights" really costs about $.30 per
light to manufacture and ship in bulk to the United States, so getting
them for "free" plus $3.95 shipping and handling plus filling out a
'survey' translates to about a $1.80 profit. This doesn't count the
$2-$5 marketing firms will pay per completed survey.)

It doesn't sound like a lot of money. But one company I did some work
for was making *millions*, in part by selling products (like the lights
above) for "free." (I'm not saying Metrowerks is making a
profit--chances are, as they probably don't have the infrastructure to
handle bulk fulfillment cheap, the $9.95 probably is close to
representing their real fulfillment costs.)

Because so many people were hiding the cost of goods and a small profit
in the "shipping and handling", many states started asking for sales tax
on products which are "free" if you pay "shipping and handling," in
order to close a potential loophole for avoiding sales tax. Otherwise, a
company such as Amazon could potentially give away all of it's music CDs
for free--just include $19.95 S/H per CD...

i have another question regarding this announcement: is there a way to
install it without having 6.x installed? i just tried installing the
copy from the WWDC - it turns out i can't install because i don't have
CW 6.x.

well, the reason our company stuck with 5.x was that both 4 and 5 (heck,
even version 3) had lots of problems that were never fixed and we didn't
feel like repeating this experience (buy buggy product, spend countless
hours trying to get it to work (or give up in the case of the debugger
for java - stack traces work fine), then pay for ugrade to next version
which introduces a few new bugs without fixing the old ones...

anyways... i thought i would check out version 7 for OS X... no luck.
will try JBuilder then...

goodbye.

   nik

ps: as for all the happy CW customers: they are not developing Java. i
have no doubts CW is great for native development. but for Java... no.

I am afraid not, If you had one copy you could probably move this to
other systems but you need CW 6.x installed.

>well, the reason our company stuck with 5.x was that both 4 and 5 (heck,

CodeWarrior 6 strived to have as many bugs fixed as possible. We heard
this complaint and I believe we did extremely well at this.

CodeWarrior 7 will keep this tradition with a long and open beta of CW 7
through the Early Access CD.

Developing Java should not be any large problem for Macintosh
developers. It is no more quirky with CodeWarrior than any other tool.

Define Cocoa, seriously this is so misunderstood, but if used in the

Now if you are asking are we a project builder clone, NO

A Cocoa app is one that is linked against and uses the Cocoa framework.

> Now if you are asking are we a project builder clone, NO

I didn't ask if you were making a project builder clone. I asked if I
could build a Cocoa app using CW.

Let me be very specific: Can I use CW to build, run and debug the
Objective-C version of the TextEdit.app example from
/Developer/Examples/AppKit? If so, the answer to my question is yes.

Fabrice, are you saying that CW can't cope with importing the Cocoa.h
header, or that it can't cope with linking against the Cocoa framework?

That is a good answer.

Yes it can.

I don't know if it can that exact one, I don't have the objective C
knowledge to convert it, But we do have a simple cocoa stationery
project that does use the cocoa Framework and ithe code is in Objective C

When CW can build the examples in /System/Developer/Examples/Appkit/,
then it will be useful to Cocoa developers. Let us know when this is
the case.

Maybe _you_ should try and let us know if it's the case, since _you_ are
the one with Obj-C/Cocoa experience, not Ron. And if it doesn't, file
some bug reports.

I don't know that it can't do that now. I guess I'll assume it can
until shown differently and you can assume what you want to. Metrowerks
has consistently met your every increasing criteria regarding
Objective-C.

I say again, we are not a PowerBuilder clone and will not attempt to be
one. No matter how much you like Objective-C for the near future the
majority of OS X applications are going to be wrote in C/C++.

I'm not the vendor, dude.

Nobody's asked you whether CW is a ProjectBuilder clone, or asked you to
make it one. What I've asked is whether CW can build a Cocoa app, and
you've been quite equivocal on that point. How hard is it for you to
attempt to build an example which is already known to build correctly
under GCC?

Thanks, Bruno. That's what I needed to know.

BTW, it looks like one or more of the math libraries isn't getting linked.

If you cared about the product, you wouldn't think it's excessive to
spend a couple of hours to see what it takes to build a simple Cocoa
app, and do something useful with that information -- like post it here
so we all know.

If you don't care about the product, stop complaining about what it does.

Who complained? I asked whether it was suitable for a particular
purpose, and didn't get a straight answer.

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your intent.

The people that would know are out of the office, I have no idea how to
do this although I do have a mild interest in learning Objective C.
I'll find out next week for certain. I only answered because your
"questions" left what I considered to be a false impression. I was just
trying to be honest.

Metrowerks has built and ran these examples using CodeWarrior EA 7.

AppKit:
CompositeLab
DotView
HexInputServer
MenuMadness
OutlineView
Rulers
SimpleImageFilter
SimpleService
Sketch
TextEdit
TextSizingExample
UserDefaults

CoreFoundation:
NotificationObserver
NotificationPoster

Foundation:
Authenticator
ForwardInvocation
MultiThreadedDO

Some of the code uses non-standard gcc features that need to be changed,
but that was just in 4 or 5 places.

The only libraries I included in the TextEdit app are MW_Runtime.a and
crt1.o. Since we're using a plugin based on Apple's linker, you need to
make sure these two libraries are at the bottom of the link order. You
can be strange results sometimes if they're not.

Has anyone profiled CW- and PB-built versions of these examples? CW is
reputed to have a better compiler, and I'd like to see some figures.

I often have similar questions to the ones you pose. In my case I try
these things myself. Not only do I get the answers but the contribution
to my education and understanding is very valuable.

Of course that does mean I actually have to do the work....

respect...

And buy CW6 first. Don't forget that.
