Mysterious Link Error CodeWarrior (Gold 10 For Mac68k)

Hi, (Cross-posted: comp.sys.mac.programmer.codewarrior; codewarrior.mac)

I've encountered problems (conflicts?) with Mac OS 8.x running
CodeWarrior Gold 10. I am trying to setup a stand alone 68K (older)
Macintosh development and test machine running Mac OS 8.1 or greater.
(Primarily to allow users to write programs on this machine in
CodeWarrior C/Pascal. Don't laugh -- 68k Macs are still useful, RIGHT?
umm.. yeah.. Well if you don't have enough iMacs to go around :) ) The
latest version of CodeWarrior I have that will run on 68K Macs happens
to be Gold 10, although I am not limited to this version on my newer PPC
machines. I am fully aware that the version of CodeWarrior I am trying
to install is quite old. I am wondering first if I can run Gold 10
under Mac OS 8.0+ -- and second if it can be run under this environment,
how I can fix the following Link Errors that I get every time I try to
Make a project:

Link Error : Error while creating new file
The read/write permission of only one access path to a file can allow
writing

Link Error : Error while saving resources.
Saving spool file / Entry not in queue.

If it is not possible to run Gold 10 under Mac OS 8 I may be willing to
consider downgrading to 7.6.1. Things I have tried already are:
applying all patches to Linker, IDE, etc. from Metrowerks web site.
Resetting Access Paths. Creating a few new projects; 68k Mac C and 68k
Mac Pascal -- and making them. I have tried moving the project to other
drives from the "Macintosh HD" (System Drive) and tried rebooting w/o
extensions. I have tried rebuilding the desktop, and other various jabs
in the dark. Have tried moving the CodeWarrior folder around. Have
tried increasing the amount of RAM. Have tried increasing the maximum
memory for the IDE (1.7.2). Have tried various combinations of options
in the 'Project Settings...' dialog. Everything I try seems to end up
with the same two errors. Everything compiles fine, it just doesn't
link. I even tried reinstalling CodeWarrior once.

Maybe there is a documented case of this somewhere that I didn't find?
I can't really understand the first error. If you ask me it is
late-night-programmer-speak for 'Something is entirely messed up with
the linker destination object/object path'. I didn't come across
anything slightly related on the Metrowerks website.

I also have CodeWarrior 8 :( -- let's hope I don't have to go there..

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks very much,
     OldeMac

P.S. More than anything I am curious what that darn message means! ;)

You probably have the project and the output file named the same, so CW
is failing to write the file because it can't overwrite the project.

You probably will have a problem with MetroNub with CW/10 it will not
work with the newer 8.1 or higher OS versions.

You should be able to run Versions of CodeWarrior up to CodeWarrior 4 on
68k macs, it is only the 4.x IDE's that require PowerPC computers.

In CW/10 there was no name listed in the output file by default, instead
it used the Project file minus the extension as the default output name.
If however you do not have an extension when it comes to writing the
output the name of the project is used and since that is in use you
can't write it and you get this strange error message.

If Debugging is necessary you might need to downgrade, I forget if it
is 8.1 or 8.5 where the old MetroNub won't load.

Yup,

Works ;) That's funny... I had forgotten this, but I used to use 10 w/o issue on a similar machine, and I think this is one
of the first things I figured out -- hehe -- And here I thought something was messed up with the linker with obscure Mac
filesystem internals dealing with write permissions, when it was actually a simple wetware error :0 ! Thanks for giving me
a clue. Lesson to be learnt though: Don't let the seemingly cryptic, grammatically questionable error messages from a
linker get you all suspicious or confused. =) Hopefully now Deja will be picking this up for the next person when they
search for that string. I am surprised the question wasn't asked already. Maybe I missed it.

Thanks for your help both,
Cheers,
     OldeMac

Hi,

Yes.. it works now. I will test out MetroNub and downgrade if necessary.

Thanks,

This is not a Metrowerks error which is one reason it is hard to
understand. It has been quite often talked about on this newsgroup and
with CW/10 it was rampant as the stationery didn't have that filled in.
I've put it in a FAQ in most of the later releases.

Oh here is another one. If you get an error message saying it can't
write a library with the name of the application you are creating.
That means your heap is not large enough. Go figure :)

Its been asked abot 5000 times, actually - unfortunately, deja is no
more, and it may have not been asked in the past few months. Google
only goes back to Aug.
