Hello,
I need to be able to run both CodeWarrior 5.3 and 6 on the same
machine... is this doable? Any conflicts? Should I put them on
seperate partitions with seperate OS's for them to play with? Or can
they be on the same partition and same OS? Thanks alot...

You may need to keep both versions of MetroNub in your ext folder under
different names, and switch twixt them with the extension manager.
That's about it.

Try to un-learn the habit of double clicking on project files - keep
some aliases handy and drag n drop onto them appropriately.

Other than that, did it for a long time without pain. But then I got
everything working under 6 easily and did not look back. YMMV.

I've been doing it for 6 months now no problems.

The only thing is to install CW 6 last so that MetroNub is the one
installed, it is backwards compatible.

Be sure you open the projects with the correct version.

What I've started doing is to install the compiler on a disk image.
That way, I can archive old compilers and bring them back out if I need
to make a quick fix to an older product. I can also mount just the
compiler I need. That way I can still double click on a project (once
the volume is mounted), and it does the right thing. And, if you don't
need to use flex (lex) or bison (yacc), you can use a compressed disk
image, and your 600 Meg install only takes up about 200 Megs.

Unfortunately, flex and bison need to write to a directory within the
Metrowerks folder hierarchy, so projects which rely on those tools
won't work with a compressed (read only) disk image.

The only other problem this has presented is that if I use an
uncompressed disk image, even without using flex or bison, then
Retrospect backs it up again on the next incremental backup. Kind of a
pain, but not too big of a deal.

Oh, and you need to make sure the correct MetroNub is installed when
running each compiler.

I gotta say, the backwards compatible bit is a stroke of genius.

You install a new version, and the old one "just works."

I'll be using 5.3 (for most work) and 6.0 (for experiments and eventual
Carbonization) in tandem for a good long time yet, esp. because because of
the CarbonLib scroll wheel problem. So it's great that they don't conflict.

The scroll wheel problem is easily overcame if you install USB Overdrive
from www.usboverdrive.com and throw away the Logitech drivers it works
fine with CW 6.

I've been running 5.3 and 6 on the same machine for a week or so now by
placing each in it's own read/write disk image -- and mounting one or
the other at a time. As long as you disable 'verify on mount' in DiskCopy,
they mount within a second.

Hm, I always make mine writeable because MPW Shell still doesn't run off
a locked volume...

How are you coping with the Command+F doing different things depending on
which IDE you have loaded? It's really hard to get used to it. I wish there
was a use Old Style Find option is there?

I keep mine writeable as well (because I still use those crappy Bison and Flex
plugins), but I actually put MPW back onto the harddisk. I don't want to keep
my MPW scripts synchronized across 2 disk images, and I've already got plenty
of hardcoded paths in them. =)

I plan on using CWPro6 another week before I write up my "bugs+suggestions"
list, but this issue is at the top of it.

I second that!
