Problem with CW6 debugging Java using deprecated MetroNub version
#1396

Hi,

I recently upgraded from CW5.3 to CW6 running on a 500MHz Pismo PowerBook.

I'm developing a Java application. In CW5.3 I used the deprecated
MetroNub debugger primarily because the speed of the default
debugger (using the Sun Java Debugger API) was abysmal.

When I upgraded to CW6, I assumed that the same performance problems
would exists for the default debugger, and so I also installed the
deprecated MetroNub debugger again.

Unfortunately, the deprecated MetroNub debugger does not appear to
display the contents of objects correctly. Specifically, the name
of each variable is displayed as garbage, and I'm not convinced that
the contents are displayed correctly either. This all worked fine
on CW5.3.

I've tried the default debugger, but as expected, the performance
makes it unusable (15 second for each step operation, 50 seconds
(or more) to update the display after a break point etc).

Is there anything I can do to either improve the performance of
the default debugger or make the deprecated MetroNub debugger
display object contents properly?

Help! Right now it looks as though I will have to downgrade back
to CW5.3...

It is poor but not abysmal I've not getting the results you are on a
slower machine with 5.3.

By this do you mean you use the one in the Thrill Seekers folder or you
installed the one from 5.3. If you did the one from 5.3 that is probably
the reason. If you did the one from the Thrill seekers, be sure you
installed it correctly you just add the plugins you don't need to use a
different MetroNub.

you can speed things up a lot by switching to the "Automatic" variable
display mode. This will significantly improve the performance of the
debugger.

The automatic variable display mode is activated by clicking on the dot in
front of the word "Variables" in the debugger panes. The pane will toggle
between "Variables: All" and "Variables: Auto".

Perhaps this is your problem. On a 400 mhz laptop I find this slow but
not unreasonably slow and not enough that I feel I must use the MetroNub
but I do understand the desire to use it.

Send your problem to tech support and please copy me when you do.

Thanks, this should behave for you, we just need to find the culprit.

The same thing is happening with me. I installed the deprecated
debugger following the directions in the Thrill Seeker folder.

And the default debugger is also painfully slow for me.

Please report this as a bug, and give all your conditions. I'll check
into this in the meantime. One may be just a setup but more than one
seems like a pattern.

How do you have the variable display is it automatic or not. Also it
would be useful to know how you are setting up the TCP etc. anything you
can think of would be very useful.

Thanks for any cooperation

Please report this to <cw_bug@metrowerks.com> The bug report and other
forms are in the CodeWarrior Release Notes : email Report Forms folder.
