I am trying to maintain a catalog of CD's. Clearly they cannot all be mounted at the same time. Is there any way I can retrieve some sort of unique reference of a volume so I can later check to see if two folders/files are on the same volume (without requiring that volume to be mounted). The FSSpec contains the vRefNum, but its only guarantied to be unique while the volume is mounted, and used to distingish between other mounted volumes.

Off the top of my head, a combination of name and formatting time. PBGetVInfo returns this in the ioVCrDate field. G

Just hash together a value based on catalogue information such as the creation date, logical length and so on. This is usually sufficiently unique. You may like to look at the way CD Remote stores this info so you could use existing catalogue information from the Apple CD Player (if this was important). Apple have a technote about how it works. cheers, Graham > From: Cliff Russell <crussell@acdsystems.com> > Organization: ACD Systems Inc > Newsgroups: > comp.sys.mac.programmer.codewarrior,comp.sys.mac.programmer.help,comp.sys.mac. > oop.powerplant,codewarrior.mac > Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 12:01:46 -0700 > Subject: Identifying volumes > > I am trying to maintain a catalog of CD's.
