CodeWarrior claims my files are read-only; other editors (e.g.
DreamWeavers) have no problems allowing me to edit and save.

More details:

(A) The file I need to edit is showLectures.java, in directory
visitor. Here is the terminal output of ls -al

drwxrwxrwx 6 kraka staff 204 Apr 26 12:10 visitor

drwxrwxrwx 6 kraka staff 204 Apr 26 12:10 .
drwxrwxrwx 9 kraka staff 306 Apr 26 12:15 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 kraka staff 1035 Apr 26 12:15 showLectures.java

(B) I am using CodeWarrior version 8.3 - IDE version 5.1.1 Build 1108
and my mac is running OS 10.2.5.

Please help me with a work around and preferably also an explanation
as to what is going on

You don't happen to have another project running which uses that file do
you? I'm working on a client/server app, and I notice that if I have the
server running under the debugger, am working on the client (a common
situation for me), and try to edit a file that is common to both projects, I
get that error until I kill the server process.

You know about this one:
Is the file currently open in some other program?

Also try these:

In the Finder, select the offending file and do a Get Info.
Is the "Lock" checkbox checked? Locking a file is not the same as
a Unix read-only permission.

Using a resource editor like ResEdit or Resorcerer, open the
offending file. Does it have 'ckid' resources? These are used
by some version control systems to hold state information
about files.

Also. Debug a client app running on a test machine by connecting to
your dev machine and double clicking on the .sym file (that way I'm
always running the most recent version). Now do something that crashes
(test machine's) Codewarrior or crash the test machine. Now CW on my
dev machine thinks any file that I had open on my test machine is still
open, therefore locked. I can get around that by dragging the file into
Project Builder and saving the file after a non-change
(space-delete-save). Now CW is happy again. Relaunching CW would
probably work but I don't have that kind of time :-)
