need util to read long PC filenames

Hi all,

I find myself moving a lot of source code files back and forth from a PC
to a Mac (via zip disks) lately. Usually the way it works is that a
file is initially created on a PC, some content is added to it and then
it gets popped onto a zip disk and shoved into a Mac.

The problem is that the Mac only reads the old DOS 8.3 filenames,
instead of the win95 long filenames, so with any filename longer than 8
characters, you get something nice and descriptive like SPRITE~1.cc
(should be SpriteClassDriver.cc).

What I want is a utility program that will run in the background on a
Mac and show the win95-style long filenames (if any) instead of the
fairly useless DOS-style filenames for any PC-formatted disk it reads.

If anyone can point me to a program that does this, I'd be grateful.
Oh, and on the off chance that one doesn't exists because it 'can't be
done', could someone tell me why not ? ;)

Much thanks in advance,

reliable news reader very often)
