This Week At Macware...

Featured Software Review:

MORPHER 1.5 -- The incredible image morphing scenes in Terminator II
enthralled movie goers and made the film an international box office
smash. Now Morpher 1.5 brings image morphing to the Mac in a $20 shareware
program that lets you create Quicktime morphing movies. Start with two
PICT images and watch the fun.

                        ********************

Snapshot Reviews:

FAST EDDIE -- This program enables you to run almost any Apple II program
on your PowerMac by emulating the operating environment of the Apple
IIgs. Copyright restrictions on the Apple II ROM require you to install
either ROM 1 or ROM 3 software from the Apple II for Fast Eddie to be able
to work, however.

SENTRY -- Third-part control panel that creates a log entry in your system
folder each and every time your Mac is booted up, enabling you to identify
any unauthorized use of that machine.

SUPER COUNTDOWN -- Star Trek fans will appreciate this application. It
creates a larg countdown clock on your desktop that can be set as far as
10 hrs in advance. Once the clock reaches zero, Super Countdown will
launch any program you assign it. Reminds me of those clocks on the
bridge of the Enterprise when the crew is forced to blowup the ship to
elude an enemy. Now all it needs is a sultry female voice!

LUNAR VIEW -- And while we're on the topic of space (the final
frontier)... Lunar View is a moon phase predictor with a very nice
user interface. Predicts lunar phases for anytime in the past, present, or
future.

VERSION MASTER -- The creation of my friend, Tom Reahard of Symmetry
Software in Scottsdale. This freeware application catalogs all the
software on your hard drive and builds a database report on exactly which
versions you're running. Then, if you want, the program will launch
itself on the Internet and log into Tom's server in Arizona where it
compares your list with a list of the very newest versions of your
software. The program will then rebuild your report telling you what the
newest versions are.

This is the full release version of the same program Macware Digest
readers beta-tested last fall.

APPLE ANNOUNCES DUAL O/S STRATEGY AT MACWORLD EXPO

In case you missed the news --- and the webcast -- Apple announced it
would be pursuing a dual operating system development strategy with at
least four more releases of System 7.X (7.6 being the next major
upgrade). Apple stressed it would continue to actively support the
Macintosh platform.

Meanwhile, Apple and NextStep engineers will be developing Apple's new
O/S, code-named Rhapsody which the company hopes to get into developer
hands by mid to late 1997 with consumer release in mid 1998.

If you're interested in reading more about Apple's strategy, there's a
link from Macware's frontpage to Ellen Hancock's letter to Mac customers
explaining Apple's move. I have also posted a long letter from Apple's
Developer Newsletter on Macware Forum which goes into some detail on the
company's strategy from the development community's perspective.

WEBCAST OVERLOAD....

Well, I don't know about you, but I wasn't able to access the Webcast of
Gil Amelio's keynote speech last Tuesday at the MacWorld Expo. Obviously
there were a LOT of anxious owners and users... not to mention press,
developers, vendors, competitors, and more ... who wanted to hear it as
well. Early reports however, painted it as "long and rambling." If you'd
still like to hear it, Apple announced they would be making a streaming
video archive version of it available sometime this week. Check out
http://live.apple.com for links to the speech.

I was able to listen to an archived RealAudio version of Guy Kawasaki's
keynote speech which was interesting, although it didn't produce much
information of substance other than to highlight a dozen or so companies
who are still committed to developing software for the Mac, including the
Menance of the North....

MICROSOFT IE 3.0 NOW AVAILABLE....

There are some 26 million Macintosh computers in the world. That's a hard
figure to ignore, especially since 20% of the computers accessing the
Internet are Macintoshes. So, in its continuing quest for global
domination, Microsoft has launched the full version release of its
Internet Explorer for the Mac, and I have to tell you, it's a good one, in
some respects better than Netscape's Navigator.

While I personally hope Netscape kicks MS's you-know-what in the battle
for the desktop, in the long-run this competition benefits you and me.

You should also know that Apple has agreed to bundle IE 3.0 with all
future Macintoshes. What's that tell you?

                        ********************

NEW BOOKS IN MACWARE'S ONLINE BOOKSTORE...

I've added three new books to Macware's on-line bookstore.

Teach Yourself Internet Game Programming With Java in 21 Days (1996)
Book & CD Rom Edition. $35.99

Tricks of the Mac Game Programming Gurus (1995)
Book & CD Rom Edition $45.00

Sex, Lies and Video Games: How to Write a Macintosh Arcade Game (1996)
Book & Disk Edition $31.46

You'll find them in the Programming Section -- (Look for the Robot)

MACWARE GETS YET ANOTHER FACE LIFT

Next time you visit Macware, don't be surprised by the New Look... again!
I had to agree with a reader who commented to me via email that while he
liked the site, there was "too much red." So, I decided to
give the site another make over, including returning to the old Macware's
left side frame controls, this time without the frame borders.
I think you'll like result.

Also, another reader wrote me to say, "You don't update this site
enough." Of course, my first reaction was, "Go to he..", but on
reflection, I think what was happening is he or she looked at the
"Reviewed This Week" column and it looked the same from week to week, even
though I am now reviewing six new software programs a week instead of the
one or two previously.

Five of those six reviews are on the Software Snapshots page but you'd not
know that by looking at just the front page.

So, to let visitors know exactly what's new this week on Macware, I am now
including links to all six programs on the frontpage, instead of just the
one longer featured review.

I hope that helps change the perception that Macware isn't updated
enough. Frankly, I'd like to update it daily, but that means finding a
way to generate revenue from Macware. After all, I've got a family to
feed, a daughter in college, and bills to pay, too.

I am working towards that end, so expect to see a little commercialism
creep into Macware over the next year. I'll try to keep it tasteful and
informative.

BTW -- If you'd like information on Macware's advertising rates, drop me
line at editor@macware.com.
