Have you tried/heard of ResEdit? It can make files invisible quite easily:

It's a shareware program and here's how to do it...

When you open the program (make sure it's version 2.0 or greater), it gives you
a common dialog box asking you which file to open. Hit "Cancel" and then select
"Get File/Folder Info" from the FILE menu. Select the file you wish to hide
via another dialog box and a set of options appears with the filename. One
of those options is a checkbox labeled "Invisible". Simply check it, close the
window (It'll ask you if you want to save the info changes, just say "yes"), and
quit the program. Voila! your file is now invisible to the user.

Note that this means you have to do this process on the machine that the hidden
file resides, but it's the only way I know of.

One good thing is that you simply take ResEdit w/you when you leave the user's
machine, and there's no way he can undo what you did, unless he finds a copy
himself.

Hope this works for ya...
