I use MacX (I have no choice, it is the only one siteliscensed here at U-Mich.) and some complaints: 1. It seems as if MacX fragmets my heap alot. I am running under 32-bit mode and I have two monitors (one an E-Machines T-19, the other Apple's normal). Other than the memory allocations not properly adding up in "About This Macintosh," frequently the colors of my screen get screwed up for ~5 seconds. After running MacX, I almost always have to restart due to memory problems sooner or later. 2. I use MacX cheifly to run dynamical CAD programs such as ADAMS and DADS from my (fairly nice) office Mac. I have no problems running DADS from a DECstation in the rootless mode (i.e., using the MacX window manager), but I must run ADAMS with a root window and mwm (Motif window manager) managing the windows from the DECstation. I have yet to determine if this is a fault of ADAMS or MacX. I got a feeling it is MacX because once I tried removing my Apple Monitor, and I got ADAMS to run in the rootless mode, although it's window was 1 cm by 1 cm. I think it has something to do with when ADAMS requestss the screen size, extra monitors confuse MacX. 3. I "wish" the rootless mode (very easy to work with in a Mac envorment) would be more "functional" win the X sense. That is, like mwm, I wish the windows would have pull down menus to send the process signals. Also, the icons for "iconifying" windows should get the standard icons from the X client and collect them in an icon manager. 4. Finally, there is no way to print, or otherwise save, the image of a window in MacX. ======================================================================== | Michael F.
