Max number of open files

What is the maximum number of files that one can open from an application?
Since with AppleShare you must keep open all files that may be modified,
this is an important parameter. Can I find it in a global? Or compute it?
Is it shared between applications under Switcher/Servant/Juggler?

In IM, I have found that the number is 12 (Probably including System and
the application resource file). By looking at the boot blocks on my SE HD20,
I have found 10. I have also written a small LsC application that opens files
until an error is returned. It managed to open 36 files! So what is the
answer?
