System hangs during boot

Maybe someone can offer a suggestion to this problem. The system is a
Mac+ and Photon 30 drive, finder 5.3. When it boots, the desktop is
displayed as are the menu titles and then it hangs. The cursor is the
little watch. There is a great deal of disk activity as the system is
coming up, then 1 or 2 very short bursts and then oblivion.

Any suggestions? I tried booting from floppy and everything is fine
until the system tries to read the hard disk. Then the same behavior
with the same results.

As usual, thank in advance.

Dan.
