Jumbled text. Fractional font problem?

I have encountered a problem with text being all jumbled up 
when working with certain graphic programs like pagemaker and
cricketdraw, from a mac II.   

An example of this was when working with PageMaker 2.0
I went to the scrapbook to retreive some text data. The data was
in the New York font, and it appeared all jumbled. I am almost
sure this problem is a result of a fractional font setting being
incorrectly true. Has anybody else encountered this? If so does
anyone know a way to prevent, or fix this problem?
