help wanted: MacWriter, Imager Printer problem!

I am posting this for one of my friend and would like
to hear from you desperately.  Peasee e-mail me. Thanks.

Symtpom: 

    His image write produces a line of garbage onece in a
    while (around one line per page, randomly located).  
    The upper half of the printed line looks like the lower of half 
    of what should be printed, and the lower half of the line looks like
    real garbage (like "^^^^^^^^").

 Anyway, could anyone out there suggest any advice/first-help?
 He is supposed to finish his paper (he is attending law school)
 by this weekend and wants to know whether he should replace
 any defective parts if any.  Oh, he is using MacWriter in
 Mac 512 K (before Mac Plus).  Again any help would be greatly
 appreciated!!!
