My Jasmine DirectDrive 70 also makes the "jet" noise on startup, but after that
it settles down and isn't too noisy.  But then you add the noise from my
Kensington System Saver and the buzz I have from the transformer for my modem
and I have to stick my headphones on so I can think!  I guess this won't help
you much, but...
