Boy do I feel foolish!
   It's been a while since I poked around in a mac plus... I swapped
out the wrong simms.  So, if you see the symptoms described in my
previous post, it means you only have 1 meg and r8 has been cut (or
the rumored jumper in the rumored new plus) for more than i meg of
ram.  Oh, well.  Learn a new failure mode every day.
