apple 1.4M drives

Does anyone know if Apple's 1.4M drive really works with 800K and
400K Mac disks "as advertised"?

If you recall, although Apple 800K drives "work" with 400K disks,
writing on a 400K startup disk in an 800K drive can sometimes alter the
data so that the disk can no longer be used to boot a Mac.
(This isn't widely "advertised.")

Does anyone know *for sure* whether the same problem has been
found on the 1.4M drives, or do they "really" work?
