Allegro CL questions/problems

I am trying to compile a huge file with Allegro CL and am facing some
problems. Please respond to me if you can help:

I am calling the compiler (compile-file filename :verbose t) but I
never get anything printed in the listener. Is there a hiden global
that I should set or a bug?

I have the Allegro CL application in folder with the file init.Lisp (at
the same level). If I start the Application itself the file init.Lisp
is not loaded as the manual claims. The only way it loads is if the
application and the init.Lisp file are both on the desktop. Does anybody
else have that problem? Is it something I do?

I am running Allegro CL v1.2.2 on a Mac IIx with system software 6.0.3

Thanks for any help.
