RGB -> PixelPaint (help)

I need to import a scanned image into PixelPaint so that I can edit it.
The image is in 3 color planes (R, G & B) each 8 bits deep. Is there a
program available to take RGB data and convert it into something that
I could read with PixelPaint? Since this is 24 bits/pixel, I assume that
some mapping would be required to get it down to 8 bits/pixel.

I heard that Supermac has a program to do this sort of thing...
