How to shrink windows to an icon?

This is probably one of those totally obvious-if-you-would-dig-in-the-manuals
questions, but can you shrink windows to an icon on the bottom of the desktop?
And if so, how does one do it? My VMS (gasp!) Decwindows will do it, and I
assume x-windows does it, but can the mac? Sure would make going from appli-
cation to application MUCH easier!
