Yes, You need the Plaintalk mic, but it's because the PlainTalk mic has
line-level output and contains an inbuilt amplifier. That means, that
Your Mac has not a normal microphone-level input and needs much higher
input voltage to get Your sound.

You can use an ordinary mic only with some amplifier. For instance, if
You can master the cords, You can connect Your mic to input of a
cassette recorder and the line output of recorder to input of Mac. Or,
better and less dangerous, You can buy a Plaintalk mic ($49?).
