MacTCP & Apple Talk Remote Access (what gives?).

Howdy folks,

Got another question for y'all:

Why does Apple talk Remote Access (ARA) kill MacTCP when it hangs up??

I have a Mac at school hooked up to the campus net via phonenet => internet
via MacTCP. I can call this Mac (and get net access) from home using ARA, but
as soon as I disconnect (from home) the Mac at school loses internet access
(appletalk is fine). It took me about three weeks to figure out why I had to
restart my mac at school (sometimes) before I could use any application that
required MacTCP (Fetch, Eudora, NCSAtelnet etc). I finally clicked when my
girlfriend used ARA to connect to the campus net and sent me a message using
Broadcast, when I was using fetch & telnet. I heard the modem click as she hung
up, and at the same time fetch and telnet froze.

I've since nailed the interaction to TCP & ARA by dialing "out" to a phone
across the room using ARA and watching a telnet session freeze when ARA gives
up on the number I told it to call: Phone stops ringing, modem clicks,ARA says
"connection failed" or some such, and TCP freaks out all at the same time.

I've tried the standard methods for solving INIT conflicts (process of elimination) and I've reinstall ARA,TCP. and the whole *&#@ing system to no avail.

I've also confirmed this problem with two other macs.

In case it matters, I'm running an LC 10/100 7.0.1/1.1.1 TCP 1.1 ARA 1.0. and
i've tried they same thing on a IIsi and a IIcx . The only thing I havn't
ruled out is the specific modem (Supra 2400) 'cause all three machines happen
to have the same kind.

Any suggestions (or even confirmation) would be appreciated

thanx
