>Does anyone know what the various tones mean? When
>one of our Mac II or IIxs comes up and it's unhappy
>about something, a different sequence of tones
>comes out of the system, instead of the single short
>_note_ they normally sound when they're first powered
>up and are happy.

These indicate problems found by diagnostic routines. For an
explanation, use the mac-ii-diagnostic-sounds application archived
in SUMEX-AIM:/info-mac/sound/programs/

I've been told that _Inside Mac_ explains them but I can't find them
either there or in the _Macintosh Family Hardware Reference_.
