I want to do the following:

I want to customize some letters to create a masthead (or logo).
For example, i want to write the word "PROJECT", and pull out
the leg of the R to the right to form a sort of underline under
the rest of the word.

How does one do such things?

I had thought I could use some paint program to write the
letters as text and then edit them by adding/deleting fat bits.
I tried Canvas, but could not really manage very well. Am I on
the right track or is there some other way?

Also, eventually i will print this on a laser printer, so
the resolution has to be good.

I will be grateful for suggestions.
