A folder from hell

We have a folder that has 3 files in it that are not in use or locked. When
we try to throw this folder away and empty the trash, we get the message
"Cannot empty trash, file is in use." When we tried Norton, he says that the
file is invalid. MacTools says the file doesn't exist, but it still shows
up in the MacTools file list.

Today we tried the FOLDER FROM HELL repair utility and it was also unable to
fix this.

The system is a Mac II, 8MB, 40MB HD, System 7.0.1 Tuned-Up.

Any help, solutions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Please send
replies via Email to:

I would try to boot the Mac from an external floppy, then try throwing away
the three files, then the folder.

Yes, we tried this also. We have also tried re-building the desktop and
throwing the items away with the option key held down. Still won't go away!

Thanks for your suggestions... and please keep sending them!!

Try holding down the option key when you throw it away and/or when you empty
the trash.

Throw out the files, the folder doesn't take much space, so it really
won't bother you all that much. If you are using System 7, you can
give the folder from hell a custom icon (a dogcow for example), a
cutesy name (like Clarus), put it on your desktop and consider it
a pet :).

Admittedly, it's not a very useful suggestion, but it makes at least
as much sense as those little eyes some people have that stare at the
mouse pointer.

Cheers!
Robb

(of course, reformatting will kill the folder from hell, but that's
just a bit extreme)

We had this problem except it was caused by the security program
FolderBolt. I finally deleted the affected folders by using BOTH
MacTools and Norton Utilities, one after the other, to check the
hard disk. They both did "repairs" to each other's repairs until
the problem was solved.

What does the new Disk First Aid 7.1 have to say? When you use command-S
(to get the running status) what part does DFA barf on, if any?

I always use StuffIt to delete unwanted hellish objects. I make an archive,
stuff (with the "delete after stuffing" option on, of course!), then
trash the archive. Hasn't failed yet, but then again I haven't had such
a hellish experience as you, either....

We also have a 'folder from hell' and have tried these suggestions. I also
tried to have a look at things with ResEdit but that only works with files
and not folders.
When a solution is found then please let me know as well.
Thanks

How about creating a folder on a floppy disk with the same name as the
offending folder. Move the new folder to the same level as the
offending one. When asked if you want to overwrite, say yes. Then you should
be able to delete the overwritten one.

Try running the latest version of disk first aid over the disk. Version
7.1, I believe this will help remedy the problem.

Question: Did Norton pick the file up on disk edit? If so, try editting
the file type and creator and then trashing.

The December issue of MacUser has a suggestion on how to exorcise a Folder
From Hell, in the "Tip Sheet" column.

They suggest creating a folder *on another drive*, giving it the same name
as the FFH. Drag the new folder to the same place as the FFH, and say
"Yes" when asked if your really, really want to replace it.

They say you will now have a drag-to-the-Trash-able folder.

I haven't tried this, as I don't have a FFH handy :)
