good vi editor for the mac

This subject comes up twice a year or so...

I want a good vi (with macros, pipes, ex commands, etc.) for the mac.

I'm willing to drop some bucks if there is a commercial app.

I know about mac-stevie. I want mac-elvis. I just bought a C compiler
to do the elvis1.7 port myself if no one is already doing it.

I would appreciate a reply from Steve Kirkendal (Mr. elvis) and anyone
who has done coding on mac-stevie.

Thanks, -Mitch

That's a contradication in terms, isn't it?

A good vi editor is NOT a contradiction. Thos of you who
have not had the encouragment to fully explore vi never like it.
It is an amazing editor.
E-mail me if you want a list of some of the outstanding things
vi can do that no other editor I have seen can do.

No it isn't, you hopeless dweebs. There are a lot of things that are much
easier to do in a good mainframe editor, like vi and especially emacs, than
in a standard Mac 'word processor'.

To answer the question, the only Mac version of vi that I've heard of is
called 'stevie' (originally written for the Atari ST). Unfortunately, it
doesn't support vi keyboard macros, which makes it pointless, as far as I'm
concerned. I think that regular expression search and replace was functional,
however, but it's been a while since I've tried it.

If you're just looking for a good editor that you can use directly on text
files, I would strongly suggest you look at the excellent shareware editor,
Alpha (now in version 5.0). It is quite powerful, extensible, and flexible.
You can redefine the key bindings, for instance, and write much more
interesting macros than in vi.

Tom

Emacs yes, vi no. And if you want a mainframe editor, try Xedit...

Yes, speaking of Alpha and such, anybody know how to change the default
text editor that's suggested for text files with unknown creators? I
mean the editor that's specified in the message that ends "... would you
like to open it with TeachText?" How can I change that from TeachText to
(say) Alpha?

As you typed, Default Application CDEV was being posted in comp.binaries.mac.
Just what you need.

"Good mainframe editor"? Only a dead mainframe is a good mainframe!
