System Heap Discreps...

Hi,

I'm running Mac OS 8.6 on a PowerMac 5500/250 with 96MB ram and my problem
is this....
Conflict Catcher is reporting this error on some of the Extensions and
Control Panels I'm currently using... "Warning! This file is using more
memory in the system heap at startup than it is requesting."
So my question is...
How can I increase the amount that these files request so that I can
minimise any errors and crashes in the day to day running of the machine.
I would appreciate you responding to my e-mail address as well on this since
I think my news server spits stuff off pretty quickly.

Thank you in advance for you help.

Cheers,

Ben

Conflict Catcher is reporting the value contained in a resource in the
extension/cp/whatever that the System uses to expand the System Heap.

The extn developer is supposed to figure out how much ram the thing needs,
and then put this value in the resource. The System expands it heap by the
amount in the resource for each extn that loads. Often the value is missing
(actually the entire resource is missing) or the value is simply wrong. If
your System tends to run out of ram for the Finder, or seems to be using up
Temporary Memory (not that you can really tell easily), you'll want to
update that resource. Get a resource editor, and change the 'sysz' resource.
There's a value in there that represents the ram request.

that is a result of the system not having enough memory
you may want to buy more RAM.

your system has a modern Memory Manager
Set your Cache to its lowest setting and see if that helps

Disable some unneeded extentions. also Minamize your controlpannels.

96MB of RAM is plenty. Especially if VM is turned on, as it should be.

Huh? I haven't heard that one before. The disk cache should generally
be at its default. The errors mentioned aren't that big of a deal, and
they're due to incorrect factory settings in the extensions and control
panels in question, not anything involving the configuration of the
local system. I'd suggest writing to the authors of each of them and
letting them know of the error messages, but in general that message is
fairly benign.
