Hi. Does anyone know if Norton Utilities V5.0 and Nortons Anti-Virus V6.0 will run under system 10? I cant get any help on the Symantec Site as they're no longer current versions. Since it's unsupported, I presume any virus definitions would also be
obsolete and perhaps not compatible with the old Norton Antivirus.
And I imagine that viruses that would be found by those definitions
are unlikely to propagate on an OSX system, since they were never
intended to infect OSX. OSX viruses would be different animals
and you'd need a virus checker defined for OSX to find them.
Are there any viruses currently in the field from which you need
protection? From what I hear, antivirus-ware for OSX currently
doesn't do anything, because there are no known virus definitions
for OSX.

The latest norton utilities is ver. 8 and I would not recommend it for any OSX install - Norton Utilities just doesn't work well with OSX and causes more problems than its worth. Try Diskwarrior. For Anti virus the latest mac version is 10 and as stated previously your definitions will be out of date. Personally I haven't run antivirus software on my Mac for a year now - really no need. There are 20 000 something PC viruses and 70 or so Mac viruses - all for the OS9 and before plus flavours of word and excel macro viruses and the like. Not saying maces are immune I don't count idiots who install and run unknown programs or files, they only have themselves to blame (these are not viruses), but it is inherently more difficult to write a virus of Osx. However, it will happened one day no doubt Nigel

They only run in MacOS 9 (natively that is). And I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole anyway these days as they are horrendously out of date and unnecessary with 10.3 and above.
