Sudden Loss of Free Space on External Drive

Here's the problem. I have a Mac Plus with 4megs. I'm using System 6.05 and
finder 6.1.5. I have 60 meg drive. I use MoreDiskSpace to get more free
room on the drive. It's set to kick in after 40 minutes of idle time.

The other nite I was trying to debinex some stuff I downloaded. I was using
a program called UMCP to do this. I dozed off. When I woke up the system
was hung up. (No bomb) I restarted with the programmers switch. Everythin
was fine EXCEPT......1) the files being debinhexed were just as they
were. 2) Instead of having 20 megs free on the HD I had only about 300K.

I ran Norton Utilites. Everything is fine. I used every virus program I
have. Everything is fine. I used Mactools to see if there was an invisible
file taking up the extra space (That's what the author of UMCP had suggested
when I talked with him) I can't find any invisible files other than the
standard desktop stuff.

MoreDiskSpace had been acting wierd after the problem started...it wouldn't
launch. This morning I tried it again and it worked fine. It just spent over
four hours trying to compress stuff on the disk. No change.
Does anyone have ANY IDEA what's going on here? I'm not looking forward to
reformating the drive and starting over from backups. Where, Oh where, have
my 20 megs gone? Where oh, where can they be?

Any suggestions will be eagerly awaited. Thanks.
