I'm not quite sure what I could do with a copy of a Lotus version 1 cover since I don't know of any other suppliers of spreadsheats that will allow you to purchase an upgrade of their products, and what I really want is Excel for Windows. The point was clearly illustrated in an ad for IBM's OS2 2.0 that appeared in the Chicago Tribune (and probably most other newspapers across the USA) the other day. It said something on the order of; If you own any version of DOS or Windows, you can UPGRADE to OS2 for a special price. This is not an exact quote, but it reflects accurately what was printed. Now, if you take IBM up on this offer, does IBM now control your ownership of your versions of either the DOS or Windows (or both) that you previously used? Remember that IBMs ad did specify that this would be an UPGRADE and at a special price only for those users fitting a specific set of conditions very similar to those who upgrade within the same company for the upgraded product. The same goes for AMI Pro (a word processor) as seen in several EggHead ads. And those ads may reflect the policy of EggHead, and not necessarily AMI. If it is EggHead specifying the 'upgrade' policy, is there any enforcable contract? Jeez, I don't know.... Then again, I've never upgraded. Generally the price of an upgrade is ridiculous. You are generally better off buying a new original copy, and selling the old one. When the prices of upgrades actually rewards the faithful customer, I will consider doing it. -- --------------------------+--------------------------------- Joseph G.
